The Program

Are online studies right for me?

Many different students benefit from flexibility in scheduling and personalization that online learning options offer, including those who train, travel, compete, and perform ― athletes, dancers, actors, and musicians ― as well as home-schooled students or anyone seeking one-to-one support. The interactive learning space provides students with a personalized, dynamic, and flexible learning experience to meet their needs and academic interests.

Will I receive guidance in selecting my courses?

Yes, our college counselors and Deans help facilitate the course selection process for each student.

What are the technical requirements for online courses?

Our course-hosting infrastructure is designed for maximum compatibility and minimal requirements: Students need a notebook computer with a Windows or Mac operating system. If you want to view our online platform, Canvas, on a device with a smaller screen, we recommend using the Canvas mobile app. We recommend that students have an updated PC or Apple desktop or laptop; Chromebooks are not able to support some software used in our classes. Your laptop should have a camera and microphone as well. Most importantly, you should have consistent access to the internet.

The following 22 credits are required for graduation:

  • 4 credits of English
  • 4 credits of mathematics

How does ICL Academy ensure the quality of online courses?

ICL Academy offers a range of online high school courses that are highly interactive and encourage meaningful collaboration within a small online cohort of students. These courses are designed, developed, and taught by our experienced faculty. Our curriculum promotes the development of open-minded, independent thinkers who can apply what they have learned in the real world. Program evaluation surveys provide regular feedback about student learning, participation, and assessment. Instructors are reviewed regularly and given opportunities to participate in the professional development regarding the latest techniques in online pedagogy. We work on an ongoing basis to add new courses to expand the range of choices for our students based on their needs and interests.

I live in the New York area and want to visit ICL Academy for in-person academic experiences, in addition to the ICL residential components. Is this possible?

Absolutely! ICL Academy families have multiple opportunities to get involved with ICL Academy in New York for in-person academic experiences. Some students choose to take part in the ICL Academy “Blended” Program. Students in the Blended Program take most of their classes on the ground at ICL Academy’s New York campus, and then take one or two classes through ICL Academy at night. The Blended Program is the perfect option for students with a set schedule who can physically attend school every day. If you are interested in the Blended Program, please note that you will pay tuition for ICL Academy New York and will go through the separate ICL Academy New York admissions process.

In addition to the ICL Academy residential experiences, such as Orientation and our January STEAM weekend, we also offer ICL Academy students the opportunity to get involved outside of classes. If you are local to the New York area, we’d invite you to use our space at 18 West 89th Street to join us for proctored study halls. Additionally, while we do offer virtual clubs through ICL Academy, some of our students choose to participate in clubs on the ground, such as Spark Tank , Mock Trial, and theater productions. Parents are also invited to some events hosted by the ICL Academy Parents Association, like the annual International Food Festival. We love to get ICL Academy students involved in the broader ICL Academy community!

What kind of support can a ICL Academy student expect?

ICL Academy has a system of multi-level mentoring across all grades. Through a very personalized approach, ICL Academy seeks to develop a unique “spark of genius” in every student. In addition to our synchronous classes, students may set up one-on-one tutorials with any and every teacher. Additionally, ICL Academy’s Quest program ensures that students are able to receive, when needed, additional individualized attention and support for academic success.

College Admissions

Do colleges accept ICL Academy's online courses? How do universities perceive an online education?

Yes, colleges and universities will accept ICL Academy’s online classes for admissions. If a student receives a strong score on an AP exam or on a Higher Level IB exam, he/she may enter college with advanced standing credit or place out of introductory-level courses (each school has its own policy and students should check with the college or university directly). Colleges and universities understand that online courses help to promote lifelong learners, and view our online courses similarly as those taken in the classroom.

How do universities view certificates in IB courses?

The IB program is highly regarded by top universities. Universities are very familiar with the rigor of individual IB courses (certificates) and how well they prepare students for college-level work. Please note that, while ICL Academy does offer some IB courses, we do not yet offer the full IB Diploma Program.

Should I take SAT Subject Tests, if I am taking College Admission Tests like SAT or ACT?

Presently, competitive colleges require online students to take three SAT subject tests. To show their ability in different areas and make a stronger portfolio, we strongly recommend online students take the required number of tests and to plan for this in advance.
