FAQ

  • WHAT ARE THE SPECIFIC ADMISSIONS CRITERIA? DO YOU REQUIRE ANY FORMAL ADMISSIONS EXAMS?
We do not require any formal admissions exams. To learn more about the admissions process please complete our inquiry form. Once completed, you will be contacted by our Admissions team.
  • IS ICL ACADEMY DIFFERENT FROM HOMESCHOOL?
Yes! ICL Academy is an accredited online private high school. Our programming is not the same as homeschooling where parents choose curriculum and hold primary responsibility for instructing their children while also being responsible for submitting grades to the state. At ICL, you are part of a real school community with live classes, personalized counseling and one to one tutoring support, among so much more! To learn more about our academic programming, please see our academics page or contact an admissions counselor.
  • WHAT'S THE TYPICAL WEEK LIKE FOR A ICL ACADEMY STUDENT?
ICL Academy students carry a full online course load, completing five to six courses per year. Each course has weekly seminars.
  • WILL MY STUDENT BE INTERACTING WITH THEIR TEACHERS AND PEERS?
Our Cambridge-style weekly seminars are designed to be highly interactive and collaborative. Teachers will lead students through discussions related to course content and create a space for students to dig deeper into materials. Students will have opportunities to share their thoughts, opinions, and insight while learning from other students. This helps students gain additional viewpoints and see different perspectives. Students also have the opportunity to interact with peers during clubs and special events.
  • TO WHAT EXTENT WILL MY CHILD WORK WITH AND BE SUPPORTED BY THEIR TEACHERS?
Using Zoom, students will meet with each subject teacher and their peers once a week. Teachers also provide the opportunity for students to meet one-on-one during office hours for academic guidance and support. Throughout the week, teachers also support students within the learning management system called Buzz. In Buzz, teachers offer feedback and scores through rubrics and written comments. Students are able to review teacher feedback and retry assignments. Teachers are very responsive via email and Buzz to assist on an as-needed basis! Additional one-on-one tutoring sessions can be purchased if needed.
  • HOW DOES ICL ENSURE ITS STUDENTS ARE NOT LEFT BEHIND?
Student success is not only our mission at ICL Academy, it is also our priority. At ICL Academy, we allow our students to be excused from live seminars so that they don’t miss an important performance, tournament, practice etc. These students have many opportunities to make this time up by either watching the recorded seminar at their own convenience, or scheduling an office hour with their teacher. At ICL, we also follow the rule of 2. If a student has 2 unexcused absences, if the student is 2 weeks behind/2 weeks of a failing grade, or 2 failed attempts at a major assignment then the student is required to schedule an office hour with his/her teacher. Our Deans pull a progress report every 2 weeks. If the student is behind, they will contact the student. If the student does not respond, the administration will reach out to the parents.
  • HOW MANY COURSES CAN I TAKE AT ONCE? IS THERE A MINIMUM NUMBER OF COURSES IN WHICH I MUST ENROLL?
Full year tuition covers the cost of six courses. There are, however, multiple students that take just one or two classes with us — classes “a la carte” are available at a separate cost.
  • WHAT ARE THE TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ONLINE COURSES?
We recommend that students have an updated PC or Apple desktop or laptop; Chromebooks are not able to support some software used in our classes. Your laptop should have a camera and microphone as well. Most importantly, you should have consistent access to the internet.
  • HOW DOES ICL ACADEMY ENSURE THE QUALITY OF ONLINE COURSES?
ICL Academy offers a range of online high school courses that are highly interactive and encourage meaningful collaboration within a small online cohort of students. These courses are designed, developed, and taught by our experienced faculty. Our curriculum promotes the development of open-minded, independent thinkers who can apply what they have learned in the real world. Throughout the courses, students will view instructional content, complete practice assessment to determine student understanding, engage in discussion forums with peers, and complete application-based assignments to portray students’ skills and abilities. Program evaluation surveys provide feedback about student learning, participation, and assessment. Instructors are reviewed regularly and given opportunities to participate in professional development regarding the latest techniques in online pedagogy. We work on an ongoing basis to add new courses to expand the range of choices for our students based on their needs and interests.
  • DOES ICL ACADEMY OFFER IB AND AP COURSES?

Each year we add more AP courses so check with the admissions office for an updated list! Students also have the option to complete other AP courses or IB courses through our partnership with our sister school, Dwight Global.
